Short answer: A typical bowl takes roughly 15–20 g of tobacco, so a 50g jar gives you about 2–3 bowls, a 250g tub about 12–16 and a 1kg tub about 50–65. Buy 50g to try a flavor, 250g for a flavor you already like, and the kilo when you know you will finish it: at our current prices it works out roughly 30–50% cheaper per gram than the 50g jar, depending on the brand.
Every week someone asks us which size to get. The honest answer depends on two things: how much a bowl takes, and how sure you are about the flavor. Here is how we would choose.
How much tobacco a bowl takes
These are typical ranges, not exact numbers. Your bowl, your packing style and the cut of the tobacco all move them.
- Phunnel bowl: roughly 15–20 g.
- Egyptian clay bowl: roughly 15–25 g.
- Dark leaf blends (like Darkside): usually packed lighter or in smaller bowls, around 12–18 g.
If you are not sure what your bowl holds, weigh one pack on a kitchen scale. Do it once and you will know for good. Bowls are in Hookah Bowls.
Sizes vs approximate bowls
| Size | Brands we carry in this size | Approximate bowls |
|---|---|---|
| 25g | Darkside | 1–2 |
| 50g | Serbetli, Eternal Smoke, Al Fakher, Adalya | 2–3 |
| 200g | Darkside, Social Smoke (tin) | 10–16 |
| 250g | Serbetli, Eternal Smoke, Al Fakher, Adalya | 12–16 |
| 1kg | Serbetli, Eternal Smoke, Al Fakher, Adalya | 50–65 |
Bowl counts assume 15–20 g per bowl (12–18 g for Darkside). A few Al Fakher flavors are not made in 1kg.
When each size makes sense
50g: to try a flavor
- You have never smoked the flavor before.
- You want to test a few flavors for a mix.
- You smoke once in a while.
It costs the most per gram. That is the price of not getting stuck with a big tub you do not like.
250g: for a flavor you already like
This is the size most regular smokers end up on. It lasts about two weeks if you smoke most days, and the price per gram drops a lot from the 50g jar. At our current prices the 250g tub is roughly 40% cheaper per gram for Serbetli, Eternal Smoke and Adalya, and roughly 15–20% cheaper for Al Fakher.
1kg: for your house flavor, or for a lounge
The kilo makes sense when you smoke the same flavor often, share with friends a lot, or run a lounge or event. At our current prices, per gram against the 50g jar:
- Serbetli and Eternal Smoke: roughly 45% cheaper.
- Adalya: roughly 50% cheaper.
- Al Fakher: roughly 30–35% cheaper.
If you mix flavors
Mixing changes the math. If your usual bowl is half mint and half fruit, each flavor goes half as fast. A 250g tub of each often makes more sense than one kilo. Keep the kilo for the base flavor you put in almost every bowl, and buy the accents in 50g.
When the kilo pays for itself
Here is a simple way to think about it. At our current prices, one kilo costs about the same as 10 to 14 of the 50g jars, depending on the brand. So:
- If you would otherwise buy more than about 500–700 g of that flavor in 50g jars, the kilo is cheaper.
- Against 250g tubs, the kilo costs about the same as 3¼ to 3½ tubs for most brands. The saving is smaller, so it only pays if you will really finish it.
Two things make the kilo a bad deal: buying a flavor you have not tried, and letting the tobacco dry out before you finish it. Try the flavor in 50g first.
Keeping a big tub fresh
- Close the lid tight after every use, and keep the inner seal or bag folded down.
- Store it somewhere cool and dark, away from the sun and the AC vent.
- Many people move a session’s worth into a small airtight jar so the big tub is opened less often.
- Stir it before packing. Juice settles at the bottom over time.
Every delivery is checked in our Miami warehouse, and the tobacco reaches you factory-sealed.
Brands that come in one size
- Darkside: 25g and 200g. Dark leaf goes further per bowl, so 200g lasts longer than the weight suggests.
- Social Smoke: we carry the 200g tin only, about 10–13 bowls.
For 50g, 250g and 1kg, browse Serbetli, Al Fakher, Adalya and Eternal Smoke, or see all tobacco. Then get the rest of the setup right with our charcoal guide and which base fits which hookah.
Quick answers
How many bowls are in 50g of shisha?
About 2–3 bowls, assuming a typical pack of 15–20 g. A light pack in a small bowl can stretch it a little further.
How many bowls are in 1kg of shisha?
Roughly 50–65 bowls at 15–20 g per bowl. Heavier packs in large Egyptian bowls give fewer.
Is the 1kg tub worth it?
Only for a flavor you already know you like. At our current prices it is roughly 30–50% cheaper per gram than the 50g jar, depending on the brand, but it has to stay fresh until you finish it.
How much tobacco goes in a hookah bowl?
Typically 15–20 g in a phunnel bowl, 15–25 g in an Egyptian clay bowl, and around 12–18 g for dark leaf blends.
WARNING: Tobacco products contain nicotine. Nicotine is an addictive chemical. For adults 21+ only.
