Which base fits which hookah

Checking the neck of a glass hookah base with calipers

Short answer: Two things decide whether a base fits your hookah: how the stem connects to the neck (push-fit grommet, thread or a brand lock) and how tall the base is compared with the part of the stem that goes into the water. Most classic Alpha models take 25–29 cm grommet bases with a 44–46 mm neck; the Beat needs a mini base; the Echo is the only Alpha that also takes Twistlock bases; Alpha Smart and Wookah use their own systems.

We get this question more than any other. Someone buys a new stem, or breaks a base, and wants to know what to order. Glass bases look interchangeable. They are not. Here is how we check a fit before we pack a base, and what the manufacturers actually confirm.

The two measurements that decide it

1. The neck and how the stem connects

Look at where the stem meets the glass. There are three common systems:

  • Push-fit grommet. A silicone grommet on the stem slides into a plain glass neck. Every current Alpha Hookah except the Smart series uses this. The Alpha bases we work with have a 44 mm inner neck; Vessel bases list 45 mm; HookahTree lists 46 mm.
  • Thread. The base carries a metal adapter and the stem screws in. Alpha calls this Twistlock.
  • Brand lock. A metal ring or click piece on the base that only that brand’s stem locks into. Wookah’s Quick Lock System and Steamulation’s SteamClick work this way.

If the systems do not match, nothing else matters. A grommet stem will not lock into a threaded or ring-locked base, and a lock-style stem will not seal in a plain neck out of the box.

2. Base height against the submerged stem

This is the one people miss. Within Alpha, the neck is the same 44 mm on the full-size and the mini bases. What separates “fits” from “doesn’t fit” is height.

  • The downstem has to sit in the water, with room left above the water line.
  • Too short a base for a long stem and the stem hits the bottom or leaves no air space.
  • Too tall a base for a short stem and the stem may not reach a normal water level.

Some numbers from the makers, so you can see the gap:

  • Alpha Model X: 42.5 cm tall without a base, 48.5 cm on the Alpha DROP base.
  • Alpha Beat: 32.6 cm without a base.
  • Classic bases (Alpha CRAFT, Vessel Craft, Vessel Drop): roughly 25–28 cm tall. The Alpha CRAFT is 260 mm.
  • Mini bases (Alpha CRAFT Mini, Vessel Craft Mini): roughly 19–20 cm. The CRAFT Mini is 200 mm.

That is why Alpha sells its mini bases as Beat-only and its classic bases as not for the Beat.

Alpha Hookah: what fits what

“Confirmed” below means the manufacturer lists that base for that model. “Likely” means the connection and measurements match a confirmed base, but nobody has stated that exact pairing. For anything marked likely, message us before you buy and we will tell you what we know.

Model X, Model S, ORO and ORO Silencio

  • Confirmed: Alpha CRAFT (260 mm, 44 mm neck) and Vessel Medusa Drop (44–45 mm neck, listed by Alpha).
  • Likely: Vessel Craft and Vessel Drop (45 mm neck, 25–28 cm). For Model X also HookahTree 250 (46 mm, 250 mm). For Model S and ORO also Vessel Frosty (45 mm, 25 cm).
  • Not a fit: mini bases, Twistlock bases, Steamulation SteamClick bases, Hoob Bell Pro.
  • ORO note: Alpha asks buyers to say so if the base is for an ORO Prime. Tell us your exact ORO version.

Kappa

  • Confirmed: Alpha CRAFT.
  • Likely: Vessel Medusa Drop, Vessel Craft, Vessel Drop, HookahTree 250.

Model X Steel, Model X Reverse and ORO Light

Same grommet system as the Model X, but Alpha does not name a base for these versions. Every classic base here is likely, not confirmed: Alpha CRAFT, Vessel Medusa Drop, Vessel Craft, Vessel Drop, plus HookahTree 250 (X Steel, X Reverse) or Vessel Frosty (ORO Light). Message us first.

Beat

  • Confirmed: Alpha CRAFT Mini (200 mm, 44 mm neck, Beat only) and Vessel Drop Mini (Alpha lists it for the Beat).
  • Likely: Vessel Craft Mini and Vessel Frosty Mini (45 mm, 19 cm), HookahTree M3 Small (46 mm, 200 mm).
  • Not a fit: classic 25–29 cm bases, including the full-size Alpha CRAFT and Vessel Medusa Drop. Twistlock bases.

Echo and Echo Gold

The Echo is the only Alpha with two ways to connect: a normal grommet or a Twistlock thread.

  • Confirmed: Alpha CRAFT, Vessel Medusa Drop, Alpha CRAFT Twistlock and Alpha DROP Twistlock.
  • Likely: Vessel Craft.
  • Twistlock bases are for the Echo only. Some listings call them universal. The manufacturer does not.

Smart Box, Smart Exzo and Smart+

No glass base at all. The Smart series sits in its own acrylic cube or steel EXZO body. No round base fits it.

You can see every Alpha model we carry in the Alpha Hookah collection.

Wookah

Wookah does not use a plain neck. Current Wookah bodies use the Quick Lock System, a quarter-turn lock onto a steel ring fitted to the Wookah vase. No generic base fits a Wookah out of the box.

  • Wookah with Quick Lock (current): confirmed on Wookah vases (Terra, Squares, Smooth, Onion, Olives, Mill, Check, Bloom). The vase is about 28 cm tall.
  • Wookah Mini: confirmed on the Wookah Mini Vase, about 19 cm. Whether the standard vase ring fits the Mini is not confirmed.
  • Older Wookah with thread and grommets: takes the Wookah Thread Vase only. It is not interchangeable with Quick Lock vases.

Steamulation

Steamulation SteamClick bases carry a metal click piece made for Steamulation stems. They do not fit Alpha stems. If you are replacing a Steamulation base, match the generation of your hookah and message us with the model name. Hookahs are in Steamulation.

How to check before you order

  1. Find your exact model name, including the version (Steel, Reverse, Light, Gold, Mini).
  2. Look at the connection: grommet, thread or brand lock.
  3. If it is a grommet, check the height class: classic (about 25–29 cm) or mini (about 19–21 cm).
  4. Pick a base marked confirmed for your model. If it says likely, ask us first.
  5. Keep the grommet that came with your stem. It is part of the seal.

All the glass we carry is in Hookah Bases. Once your base is sorted, see our guides on lighting natural coconut cubes and choosing a tobacco size.

Quick answers

Do all hookah bases fit all hookahs?

No. The stem and base must use the same connection (grommet, thread or brand lock), and the base height must suit the length of the submerged stem.

Which base fits the Alpha Hookah Beat?

Alpha confirms the Alpha CRAFT Mini and the Vessel Drop Mini for the Beat. Other mini bases around 19–20 cm are likely fits. Full-size classic bases are not.

Do Twistlock bases fit the Alpha Model X?

No. Alpha states Twistlock bases are for the Echo only. The Model X uses a push-fit grommet base such as the Alpha CRAFT.

Can I put a Wookah on a regular glass base?

Not out of the box. Current Wookah bodies lock onto a steel ring on the Wookah vase. Use a Wookah vase that matches your model.
