Short answer: Light natural coconut cubes on an electric coal burner, outdoors or under a running hood, and turn them so every side catches. They are ready after roughly 8–12 minutes, when they glow orange all the way through under a thin grey ash. Tap the ash off, then place them with tongs. We usually run three 25 mm cubes on a heat management device or foil.
Natural coconut cubes take longer to light than quick-light discs. They also burn longer and more evenly once they are going. Most harsh first pulls we hear about come from coals that went on too early. Here is how we do it.
Safety first
- Ventilation. Light coals outdoors, or on a stove under a range hood that is switched on, with a window open. Never light or leave burning coals in a closed room.
- Carbon monoxide. Burning charcoal gives off carbon monoxide, a gas you cannot see or smell. A carbon monoxide detector where you smoke is a good idea. If anyone gets a headache, dizziness or nausea, get to fresh air.
- Tongs only. Handle coals with metal tongs. Never with fingers, even when they look dark.
- Kids and pets. Keep the burner, the hookah and the ash out of reach.
- Ash stays hot. Let used coals and ash cool completely in a metal container before you throw them out. Never empty them straight into a trash bag.
- Quick-light coals. They are lit with chemical accelerants. Do not use them indoors.
What you need
- Natural coconut cubes. We stock brands like CocoUS and Coco Loco in Charcoal & Heat.
- An electric coal burner, or a gas stove with a coal screen. See charcoal burners.
- Metal tongs.
- A heat management device, or foil with holes. See heat management.
How to light them
- Set the cubes on the burner with a little space between them. Air needs to get around each one.
- Turn the burner to full.
- After about 4–5 minutes, turn each cube with tongs so a new side faces the element.
- Keep turning every few minutes until all six sides have caught.
- Total time is usually 8–12 minutes. Bigger cubes, a weaker burner or a cold night push it to the long end.
How to tell they are ready
- Every face glows orange, not just the bottom.
- There is a light grey ash coat on the surface.
- No black patches or dark corners remain.
A cube that is still black in the middle will burn unevenly and can give a harsh, smoky taste. If in doubt, give it two more minutes.
Tap the ash off
Before the coals go on the bowl, tap each one gently against the burner or an ash tray. A thick ash layer insulates the coal and slows the heat getting to the tobacco. Do this every time you move or rotate them.
When to put them on the bowl
Only when they are fully lit. Then:
- Place them with tongs on the heat management device or foil. On foil, set them around the edge of the bowl, not in the center.
- Let the bowl warm up for about 5 minutes before the first real pull.
- Start with light, slow pulls. Heavy pulls in the first minutes overheat the top of the tobacco.
Three coals, or two?
Our usual setup is three 25 mm natural coconut cubes. That is how we set up hookahs, and it suits most phunnel and Egyptian bowls with a standard pack.
Two can be enough when:
- You use larger 26 mm cubes, which carry more heat each.
- The bowl is small, or you packed it light.
- It is a hot day outside, which is common here in Miami.
- You smoke dark leaf blends that do not need much heat.
Start with fewer if you are unsure. Adding a coal is easy. Rescuing burnt tobacco is not.
Managing heat during the session
- Too harsh or hot smoke: remove one coal, or move them to the edge.
- Thin clouds: tap the ash off first. If still weak, add heat or move the coals toward the center.
- Rotate: every 15 minutes or so, move the coals around the bowl so the tobacco heats evenly.
- Swap: when a cube has shrunk to about half, replace it with a fresh lit one.
A good session also starts with the right base and enough tobacco. See which base fits which hookah and 50g, 250g or 1kg: how to choose a size.
Quick answers
How long do natural coconut coals take to light?
Roughly 8–12 minutes on an electric coal burner, turning them so all sides glow. They are ready when fully orange with a light grey ash coat.
How many coals should I use on a hookah?
We usually use three 25 mm coconut cubes. Two can be enough with larger 26 mm cubes, small bowls or hot weather.
Can I light hookah charcoal indoors?
Only on a stove or burner under a running range hood with good ventilation. Never in a closed room. Burning charcoal releases carbon monoxide.
Why does my hookah taste harsh at the start?
Usually the coals went on before they were fully lit, or there is too much heat too soon. Wait until every side glows, tap off the ash and let the bowl warm up.
